Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone
As an avid Pilates fan, I never really took a liking to yoga, holding poses for a period of time didn't hold interest to me. Today I ventured outside my comfort zone. I have been experiencing lower back pain and my trainer/friend suggested I try a yoga class to help increase my flexibility and stretch out what ails me. I'm one of those people who like to do things that they do well and yoga isn't one of them.
Now I am not a total beginner to yoga. Throughout the years I have taken a class or two so I went to Jivamukti on Broadway. I signed up for the "Open" class where it didn't matter what level you were at, just do what your body is physically capable of doing. I was intimidated to say the least. Everyone seemed to know what props to use. Was I going to know every pose, could I do them? When the teacher arrived, she began the class with a lesson in "Surrendering". I had to think about this...surrender to your higher being, not the ego. So what you couldn't do tree or extend your leg over your head. The point was, focus what YOU can do to the best of your ability. After 1 hour and 45 minutes, I walked out of the class feeling exhilarated. Not only did I physically better but also mentally.
I challenge you to do the same. Open yourself up to new experiences and step outside the box of what you are used to. You may just surprise yourself.
